 Welcome

Please note that this WSS FAQ contains little on 'Programming' WSS. Readers more interested in that are recommended to have a look at Ian Morrish's WSS Demo site at www.wssdemo.com.

If there are problems at this site, remember that you can use the mirror site at www.wssfaq.com instead !

The WSS FAQ site you see today is based on version 25 released in PDF form on the 10th of April 2006 with additions almost daily since then.  Note that the PDF file contains only WSS (v2) information as all WSS v3 information has been added since.

This web site version of the FAQ is a joint effort between Mike Walsh (text and links); Jim Duncan of Collutions (site design) and Larry Strange of Mighty Smart Technologies (providing free hosting for this site including backups and security). [See their logos below for links to their sites.]

Users of this main FAQ site (wss.collutions.com) have the opportunity via the Comments button alongside each item to send Comments on the items to the writer of the items.

Users are requested not to use this for questions - which are better sent to one of the two WSS newsgroups and will not be answered if sent via the Comments feature - but for additions and corrections to the particular FAQ item. Usually these comments will then be added to the FAQ item with credit given. Give a real name if you want instant fame.

I am also glad to hear when a FAQ item has helped you to find a solution to your problem, but don't expect your comment even in this case to become visible.

Another way of sending comments on the FAQ - which is best used for proposing new items - is to send me e-mail to wssfaq@hotmail.com (If you do so, please remember to say which item who have a suggestion about!). As with all my e-mail addresses, questions sent to this address will not be answered and you will be requested to send them to one of the new public SharePoint newsgroups *saying that you are using WSS 2.0 or WSS 3.0 (or SPS 2003 or MOSS 2007)* as these are for all SharePoint products and versions

The new public SharePoint newsgroups are: (do us all a favour and post a question to only one of them)

NNTP: microsoft.public.sharepoint.setup_and_administration (installation and other administration questions

web access via:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/newsgroups/dgbrowser/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.sharepoint.setup_and_administration&lang=en&cr=US

OR

NNTP: microsoft.public.sharepoint.design_and_customization (Customizing code provided by Microsoft with the product typically with FP2003 (v2) and SharePoint Designer(v3)))

web access via:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/newsgroups/dgbrowser/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.sharepoint.design_and_customization&lang=en&cr=US

OR

NNTP: microsoft.public.sharepoint.development_and_programming (writing new code typically using Visual Studio)

web access via:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/newsgroups/dgbrowser/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.sharepoint.development_and_programming&lang=en&cr=US

OR

NNTP: microsoft.public.sharepoint.general (questions that fit none of the other newsgroups)

web access via:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/newsgroups/dgbrowser/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.sharepoint.general&lang=en&cr=US

The Tutorials section continues to benefit from two long Tutorials written in the early days by Jorgen Johanson of Norway, and of course the entire FAQ also continues to benefit from other FAQ items that have been improved via  Comments or suggested in the newsgroup or via e-mail to me. Thanks to all of you!

If you are running Sharepoint Portal Server 2003, you will also benefit from reading the excellent FAQ site for that product run by Stephen Cummins which you'll find at www.spsfaq.com.

(Blog at http://mikewalsh.bilsimser.com/ which is the SharePoint one [it used to be only the weekly additions/amendments to the WSS FAQ postings but now has other things such as Web Cast reviews - and will have book reviews if I get any.] with the Finnish stuff now at http://finnstuff.bilsimser.com/. (The old blog is still around at http://mikeswss.blogg.de/  if you want to see the older stuff).
